Chapter 5 of 17 · Conjugating French Without Hesitating
Chapter 4. The présent of the other common verbs
The verbs of the finir type, then the small band of very common verbs whose stem changes along the way: aller, faire, dire, pouvoir, vouloir, venir, prendre, voir.
Few verbs, a great many uses
Outside the -er verbs, everyday French turns around a narrow band of verbs. They are the ones that come back in almost every sentence, and they are precisely the ones whose form cannot be guessed. Learning them costs little time and pays off on every line written.
They fall into two groups. On one side the verbs of the finir type, which are regular and recognisable by an extra syllable in the plural: nous finissons, ils finissent. On the other, the verbs whose stem changes between the singular and the plural: je viens but nous venons, je prends but nous prenons. The sets in this chapter first separate these two groups, then mix them.
Reminder · verbs of the finir type
These verbs have an infinitive in -ir and a syllable -iss- that appears in the three persons of the plural: je finis, tu finis, il finit, nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent. Grandir, choisir, remplir, réfléchir, obéir, ralentir and applaudir are all conjugated this way.
Careful: not every -ir verb is of this type. Partir, sortir, dormir and venir also have an infinitive in -ir, but they have no -iss- syllable: nous partons, and not "nous partissons". The test is the plural: if the "nous" form adds -iss-, the verb is of the finir type.
Exercise 16. Verbs of the finir type
Copy out each sentence, writing the verb in the présent (the present tense). All of them are of the finir type.
- Je (finir) mon travail avant midi.
- Tu (choisir) toujours le même plat.
- L'arbre (grandir) vite.
- Nous (remplir) les bouteilles.
- Vous (réfléchir) trop longtemps.
- Les voitures (ralentir) au virage.
- On (applaudir) à la fin du morceau.
- Les enfants (obéir) sans discuter.
- Le pain (durcir) en deux jours.
- Nous (avertir) les voisins.
Verbs that are not in -er nearly all take the same endings in the singular: -s, -s, -t. Je pars, tu pars, il part. Je vois, tu vois, il voit. Three things to know before the set that follows. Partir, dormir and sortir lose the last consonant of their stem in the singular: je pars and not "je parts", je dors and not "je dorms", je sors and not "je sorts". Pouvoir and vouloir are the exception with -x, -x, -t: je peux, tu peux, il peut. And prendre takes no t in the third person, because its stem already ends in a d: il prend.
Exercise 17. The singular of the other verbs
Copy out each sentence in the présent. All of them carry a person of the singular.
- Je (partir) à six heures.
- Tu (dormir) encore.
- Elle (sortir) le chien.
- Je (voir) la mer d'ici.
- Tu (prendre) le bus ou le train ?
- Il (prendre) toujours le même chemin.
- Je (pouvoir) t'aider.
- Tu (vouloir) du sucre ?
| Person | Aller | Faire | Dire |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | je vais | je fais | je dis |
| tu | tu vas | tu fais | tu dis |
| il, elle, on | il va | il fait | il dit |
| nous | nous allons | nous faisons | nous disons |
| vous | vous allez | vous faites | vous dites |
| ils, elles | ils vont | ils font | ils disent |
Vous faites and vous dites do not take -ez, and they are two of the very few forms in the language in that case. Writing "vous faisez" or "vous disez" is a mistake the ear does not flag, because those forms exist nowhere else to correct it.
Exercise 18. Aller, faire and dire
Copy out each sentence in the présent. Check the "vous" persons twice.
- Nous (aller) au marché le samedi.
- Vous (aller) trop vite.
- Ils (aller) chez leur grand-mère.
- Nous (faire) le tour du lac.
- Vous (faire) beaucoup de bruit.
- Les élèves (faire) leurs exercices.
- Nous (dire) toujours la vérité.
- Vous (dire) n'importe quoi.
- Ils (dire) que c'est fermé.
- Tu (aller) où comme ça ?
- On (faire) une pause.
- Elle (dire) bonjour à tout le monde.
- On (dire) que l'hiver sera doux.
- Il (faire) beau ce matin.
- Tu (aller) mieux.
| Person | Pouvoir | Vouloir | Venir |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | je peux | je veux | je viens |
| tu | tu peux | tu veux | tu viens |
| il, elle, on | il peut | il veut | il vient |
| nous | nous pouvons | nous voulons | nous venons |
| vous | vous pouvez | vous voulez | vous venez |
| ils, elles | ils peuvent | ils veulent | ils viennent |
Reminder · prendre and voir
Prendre follows the same movement as venir: je prends, tu prends, il prend, nous prenons, vous prenez, ils prennent. The double consonant comes back in the third person plural, exactly as in "ils viennent". Apprendre and comprendre are conjugated in the same way.
Voir changes its stem in front of the endings of "nous" and of "vous": je vois, tu vois, il voit, nous voyons, vous voyez, ils voient. The movement is the one chapter 2 installed for the -yer verbs: the y appears in front of an ending that is heard, and gives way to i in front of a silent ending.
Exercise 19. Pouvoir, vouloir, venir, prendre and voir
Copy out each sentence in the présent.
- Nous (pouvoir) commencer.
- Ils (pouvoir) attendre dehors.
- Vous (vouloir) un peu de thé ?
- Elles (vouloir) toutes la même chose.
- Nous (venir) de loin.
- Ils (venir) chaque été.
- Vous (prendre) le premier à droite.
- Les enfants (prendre) leur goûter.
- Nous (voir) mal d'ici.
- Vous (voir) la différence ?
- Ils (voir) le sommet.
- Nous (comprendre) le problème.
- Elle (venir) avec nous.
Exercise 20. The whole présent, every verb
Copy out the text, writing every verb in the présent. Verbs from all the earlier chapters are mixed in.
- Chaque dimanche, nous (aller) au marché de la place.
- Ma mère (choisir) les légumes et je (porter) le panier.
- Les marchands (crier) leurs prix.
- Tu (vouloir) toujours t'arrêter devant le stand de fromages.
- Nous (prendre) le même chemin du retour.
- Vous (faire) la queue chez le boulanger.
- On (dire) que son pain (être) le meilleur de la ville.
- Les enfants (finir) leur brioche avant la maison.
- Ils (avoir) toujours faim.
- Nous (ranger) les courses et la matinée (être) finie.
