Chapter 3 of 17 · Conjugating French Without Hesitating
Chapter 2. The présent of -er verbs
The largest family of verbs in the language, the one whose infinitive ends in -er, and its six présent forms to be installed once and for all.
One single set of endings, for a whole family of verbs
Chanter, marcher, regarder, téléphoner, cliquer: verbs whose infinitive ends in -er form by far the largest family in the language, and it is also the family that takes in new verbs. Their présent (the present tense) fits into one single set of endings, the same for all of them, from the most common to the rarest. One -er verb alone escapes it, and that is aller: chapter 4 will deal with it along with the other irregulars.
That regularity is good news and a trap. Good news because one set is enough. A trap because four of these six forms cannot be heard: "je chante", "tu chantes", "il chante" and "ils chantent" are pronounced exactly alike. On those four forms the ear is of no use, and only finding the subject decides. That is why the previous chapter came before this one.
| Person | Form | Ending |
|---|---|---|
| je | je chante | -e |
| tu | tu chantes | -es |
| il, elle, on | il chante | -e |
| nous | nous chantons | -ons |
| vous | vous chantez | -ez |
| ils, elles | ils chantent | -ent |
Exercise 6. The six forms, with no trap
Copy out each sentence, writing in the présent the verb given in parentheses. This convention holds for the whole workbook: the verb in parentheses is in the infinitive, and it is up to you to conjugate it.
- Je (fermer) la porte doucement.
- Tu (chercher) tes clés depuis dix minutes.
- Elle (dessiner) un cheval.
- Nous (parler) trop fort.
- Vous (aimer) les fins d'après-midi.
- Ils (arriver) toujours en retard.
- On (frapper) à la porte.
- Les voitures (klaxonner) sans arrêt.
- Tu (tomber) de sommeil.
- Je (travailler) le samedi matin.
Four forms are pronounced the same way and written differently: je chante, tu chantes, il chante, ils chantent. No ear separates them. In front of one of those forms you therefore have to go back to the subject and to its person, every time, even when the sentence looks obvious.
Exercise 7. The subject decides, not the ear
Copy out each sentence in the présent. Every one of them carries a form that cannot be heard: look for the subject before writing.
- Le chien des voisins (hurler) toute la nuit.
- Les élèves de la classe (écouter) le maître.
- Ma tante et son mari (habiter) très loin.
- Le panier de pommes (occuper) toute la table.
- Les portes du garage (grincer) un peu.
- Ce vieux moulin (tourner) encore.
- Les livres de la bibliothèque (dater) du siècle dernier.
- Le groupe d'enfants (traverser) au feu rouge.
- Mes cousines (rentrer) demain.
- Le bruit des moteurs (gêner) les voix.
Reminder · verbs in -ger and in -cer
Some -er verbs change a letter in order to keep the same sound. Verbs in -ger take an e in front of the ending -ons: nous mangeons, nous rangeons, nous nageons. Without that e, one would read "mangons".
Verbs in -cer take a cedilla in front of the same ending: nous plaçons, nous avançons, nous commençons. Without the cedilla, one would read "placons". These two touch-ups concern only the person "nous", and nowhere else in the présent.
Exercise 8. The touch-ups of the person nous
Write each verb in the présent with the subject "nous". Make the touch-up when it is needed, and only when it is needed.
- manger
- marcher
- avancer
- ranger
- chercher
- commencer
- nager
- placer
- porter
- plonger
- lancer
- regarder
Reminder · verbs in -yer, in -eler and in -eter
Three small families change their stem in the présent, and always in the same way: the change touches the singular forms and the third person plural, never "nous" and never "vous".
Verbs in -yer change the y into an i in front of a silent ending: j'essuie, tu essuies, il essuie, ils essuient, but nous essuyons and vous essuyez. Those whose infinitive ends in -ayer, such as payer and balayer, allow both spellings: je paie and je paye are both correct, and this is one of the few hesitations the language really does permit. Verbs in -eler and in -eter most often double their consonant in the same places: j'appelle, tu appelles, il appelle, ils appellent, but nous appelons and vous appelez; je jette, tu jettes, il jette, ils jettent, but nous jetons and vous jetez.
A fourth family follows exactly the same split: the verbs that are neither in -eler nor in -eter, but whose second-to-last syllable carries an e with no accent, such as peser, lever, mener, promener. That e takes a grave accent in the same places: je pèse, tu pèses, il pèse, ils pèsent, but nous pesons and vous pesez. A few verbs in -eter and in -eler line up with them instead of doubling their consonant, and acheter is the most common one: j'achète, nous achetons. Geler, which is very much an -eler verb, does the same: je gèle, nous gelons.
A simple way of not going wrong: say the "nous" form, which always keeps the stem of the infinitive, then see whether the form you are looking for is on the same side as it. "Nous" and "vous" on one side, the other four on the other.
Exercise 9. The families that change their stem
Copy out each sentence in the présent. First ask yourself whether the person called for is on the side of "nous" or on the other side.
- Tu (essuyer) la table.
- Nous (essuyer) la table.
- Elle (appeler) son frère.
- Vous (appeler) trop tard.
- Ils (jeter) les papiers dans la poubelle.
- Nous (jeter) un coup d'œil.
- Je (payer) à la caisse.
- Vous (payer) en liquide.
- Le vent (balayer) les feuilles.
- Nous (balayer) la cour.
- On (feuilleter) le catalogue.
- Vous (feuilleter) le catalogue.
- Je (peser) mes bagages avant de partir.
- Nous (peser) nos bagages avant de partir.
- Elle (acheter) le pain en rentrant.
- Vous (acheter) le pain en rentrant.
Exercise 10. The présent of -er verbs, all mixed up
Copy out the following text, writing every verb in the présent. Take the sentences in order.
