What is counted
No number on this site is written by hand. Here is how each one is obtained, and where to read it.
Why these numbers, and no others
An audience counter would say how many people came. This site does not know that and will not: it sets no tracker, counts no visit and calls no other server. What remains measurable is what the house has actually produced, and that is what is published here.
Each of these numbers is obtained by a program, at the moment the site is built, by reading the disk. None is copied from an earlier version. A number copied into two places ages in only one of them, and it is always the one being quoted that turns out to be wrong.
They are republished as open data, under the same licence as the rest: two machine-readable files whose addresses are on the site map and in the settings panel. Nobody needs to take our word for it.

The guards that stop these numbers from lying
- The published page count is compared with the robots plan the build has just written. The slightest discrepancy stops the release.
- The guard first requires the key to EXIST in the published file: a renamed key triggers the refusal instead of silently disarming the guard.
- A text cannot write a number: it writes a token, and the build refuses a token it does not know.
- A token left unreplaced in a served page is refused too, by a second program that rereads the built site.
- An error page listed in the robots plan is refused in both directions: it would make every counter right while breaking the convention.
These counters say what the house has produced. They say nothing about what the books have taught anyone, and no page on this site will pretend otherwise: that is measured differently, with people, and not from a server.
